BACKGROUND

Ryan wolter
PRINCIPAL PRODUCT
DESIGNER

Hi I’m Ryan,

I believe that better product experiences create lasting customer engagement.
Over the last 20 years, I am grateful to have had opportunities to help solve big
business problems for iconic institutions and Fortune 500 companies.

Whether guiding customers through renting an RV or purchasing a car from a
vending machine, my goal has remained constant: listen intensely to the user and
build better products.

think

Taking the time to frame the problem,
understanding how human beings
perceive and experience lays the
foundation for success.

make

This is the time for experimentation
and ideation. My key methods of
validating ideas are by sketching,
wireframing and prototyping.

LEARN

Without feedback we might all be lost.
Listening to multiple perspectives and
processing data allows me to learn and
iterate.

TEAMWORK, DREAMWORK

I’ve had the pleasure of leading teams at Rent.com, Saatchi and Saatchi and Carvana.
The only way to create a culture of winning design is to foster an environment that
supports constant feedback and continuous improvement.

I have experience setting up feedback frameworks, mentoring team members,
running team meetings and scaling teams to keep up with rapid growth. I accept
responsibility beyond the design team and work rigorously with product, engineering
and company leaders to foster working relationships that create shared
accountability. My teams are able to both tout the benefits of design and also prove
their value in organizations.

RESPONSIBLE & RESPONSIVE

While contemplating a site redesign at Rent.com I met
a team of designers from The Filament Group. As it
turned out, this team was presenting the launch of
bostonglobe.com at the Breaking Development
Conference in 2009. This was the first large scale
consumer facing responsive website.

My discussion led to a partnership. The Filament Group helped Rent.com develop a
responsive version of its site. I had the pleasure of working with Ethan Marcotte,
‘The Father of Responsive Design’. He literally wrote the book on responsive design!

Users Interviewed

Ryan is an extremely talented Visual and User
Experience Designer. What separates him from other
designers that I have worked with is his keen business
sense. His user experiences not only look fantastic but
more importantly, solve business problems.

OUTSIDE OF WORK

When I’m not working, I spend a lot of my time on creative projects with my family. I am
also deeply inspired by the natural world. Taking hikes through nature allows me to
recharge and strike a balance with the digital world. I also love visiting different types
of museums. Whether it’s a tour of an artist’s home, or an established museum like
LACMA, I love the discovery museums afford.
